“The majority of the world’s designers focus all their efforts on developing products and services exclusively for the richest 10% of the world’s customers. Nothing less than a revolution in design is needed to reach the other 90%.” (Paul Pollak)

NGO's and other organisations (profit and social profit) are looking for innovative and sustainable solutions for the local needs of their target group(s). Design for Impact facilitates these expertise and knowledge by providing an innovative solution or/and a different approach to the challenges in the South, by bringing in the unique exerptise and knowhow of product designers.

Keywords are co-creation, sustainability, local resources, entrepreneurship, …and innovation. Put a designer in a different context and he can create impact!

Design for Impact is working on different projects: one exemple:

1. African Beehive: to be made in Ethiopia with local partners and in collaboration with Howest University College, Ghent University, Vlerick Management School and Rotary Wetteren

In Ethiopia million inhabitants are beekeepers. Today, traditional beehives produce about 2 to 3 kg of honey. Some of which is quickly poisend by larvea. This project wants to upgrade the production to the European standard of 30 to 40 kg of honey. Ethiopia has a long standing tradition in beekeeping: honey is used for food, medicine and even as a means of payment. Still, research by students of the Vlerick Management School learn that the value chain of the Ethiopic honey has not yet been fully deployed and has different disadvantages. For instance: the export of African honey to Europe is only 40.000 tons, which is only a tiny fraction of what other continents are delivering.

Concrete challenge: design a beehive which can be produced local and meet the constraints for the African bee and Ethiopian context.
